Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta has called on Bangladeshi business firms to invest in his country, highlighting its growing economic opportunities.
The appeal was made during a joint press briefing at the Chief Adviser's Office (CAO) in Dhaka following bilateral discussions with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and a delegation-level meeting.
Emphasizing the potential for strengthened economic and trade relations, Ramos-Horta stated, "We look forward to importing more from Bangladesh and encourage Bangladeshi companies to explore investment opportunities in Timor-Leste." He noted that Timor-Leste's upcoming membership in ASEAN would provide access to a market of 700 million people, with a collective GDP exceeding USD 4 trillion.
Ramos-Horta expressed optimism about Bangladesh becoming a key partner in Timor-Leste's development journey.
Lauding Chief Adviser and Nobel Laureate Professor Yunus, the Timor-Leste President compared him to global icons such as Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and John F. Kennedy, calling him "one of the most respected leaders in the world." Ramos-Horta praised Yunus' leadership, highlighting his efforts to transform Bangladesh through collaboration with the nation's youth.
Reflecting on the shared history of struggle between the two nations, Ramos-Horta commended the resilience and creativity of the Bangladeshi people. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality extended during his visit, terming Yunus a "brother, friend, and mentor."
Ramos-Horta arrived in Dhaka late Monday night aboard a special flight, where he was received with a gun salute and guard of honor at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by Chief Adviser Yunus. His visit aims to deepen bilateral ties and explore opportunities for cooperation between the two nations.
