The investigation of the sensational journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case was transferred from the Detective Branch (DB) to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and later to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) due to the high-profile nature of the case.

The submission date for the investigation report on the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi has been postponed for the 113th time till date. The report was scheduled to be submitted on  November 18, but as the PBI failed to file the report, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque set December 23 as the new deadline.

Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were murdered on February 11, 2012.  Afterwards, Runi's brother, Nawsher Alam Roman, filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

Initially, a Sub-Inspector (SI) from the station was appointed as the investigating officer.  Four days later, due to the high-profile nature of the case, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Despite more than two months of investigation, the DB failed to make any progress in uncovering the mystery.  Subsequently, following a High Court directive on April 18 of that year, the case was handed over to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Then on September 30, 2024, the High Court removed RAB from the case, directing the Ministry of Home Affairs to form a high-powered task force to ensure further investigation, with a report expected within six months.  The PBI is currently investigating the case.
