3 arrested over BUET student killing being rammed by pvt car in Roopganj

Three people have been arrested in connection with the killing of motorcycle rider BUET student Muntasir Masud, 22, after being rammed by a private car on 300 feet area at Roopganj in Narayanganj district.

They were arrested after Thursday midnight by police. The arrested were identified as Mubin Al Mamun, his two friends -- Mirajul Karim and Asif Chowdhury.
Deceased Muntasir Masud was a second year student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at BUET. He was the son of Masud Mia, a resident of Green Road under Kalabagan Police Station, in Dhaka.

The accident happened at about 3:30am on Friday (December 20).

Besides, two more students were injured in the accident. They are Amit Saha, 22, son of Tapan Kumar Saha of Muktagacha in Mymensingh district, and Mehedi Hasan, 21, son of Mofizur Rahman Khan of Cumilla Sadar.  Both of them are the residential students of Ahsan Ullah Hall of the BUET.

Along with Masud, all of them are the 2nd year student of the CSE Department of BUET.

Masud's classmate Faiyyaz said Masud lived at Kalabagan. Amit and Mehedi Hasan live at Ahsan Ullah Hall of BUET. Masud went out of home with his motorcycle at about 8:00pm on Thursday. Then three friends went to 300 feet area riding the motorcycle. They had had their dinner at Neela Market there. When returning home, they were stopped at a police checkpost near the Neela Market. At about 3:00am on Friday (December 20), a reckless private car rammed the motorcycle while crossing the checkpost, leaving Muntasir Masud dead on the spot. Later, the pedestrians took them to Kurmitola Hospital where an on-duty doctor pronounced Masud dead. Amit was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital while Mehedi to a private hospital in the capital.

Muntasir Masud's father Masud Mia filed a case with Roopganj Police Station in connection with the death of his son.

Roopganj Police Station's sub-inspector (SI) Riadul Islam said a private car rammed a motorcycle on 300 feet area leaving one BUET student dead. His body was kept at Kurmitola Hospital morgue. Later, the body was sent to Suhrawardy Hospital for postmortem.

Two other injured students are receiving treatment at hospitals. The private car was seized and the driver was arrested.

Meanwhile, BUET students staged demonstration surrounding the Roopganj Police Station on Friday morning. They demanded capital punishment of the persons involved in the killing of Muntasir Masud.

Police sources said arrested Mubin Al Mamun is the son of Brigadier General (Retd) Abdullah Al Mamun, and he was driving the car. The private car was registered in the name of that retired army official.
