Police have sought five-day remand after producing arrested three accused in connection with BUET student Mohtasim Masud's killing being hit by a private car at Purbachal in the capital.
On Friday (December 20), Roopganj police submitted a prayer to the court after producing the three accused. However, the court set Sunday morning for the hearing on the prayer.
Confirming it, court police inspector Qayyum Khan said the three accused were sent to jail. They were Mubin Al Mamun, Md Mirazul Karim and Asif Chowdhury.
On the court premises, Advocate Abu Raihan, lawyer defending the accused, said it was very foggy on Thursday night and there was a checkpost on the highway which was not visible clearly. The car suddenly hit the barricade of the checkpost and then the barricade hit the motorcycled standing there, causing the accident.
Contacted, Roopganj Police Station's officer-in-charge (OC) Liaqut Ali said incidents of crime had been happening at Purbachal area. Because of the crimes, police have been putting a checkpost on 300 feet road over the past two weeks. It had also a sign on specific distance.
He further said accused Mubin who was on the driving seat of the car could not show his licence following the accident.
At about 3:00am after Thursday midnight, police stopped a motorcycle at the checkpost at Purbachal in Roopganj of Narayanganj. When three motorcycle riders were talking to police, a private car suddenly appeared there and rammed them, leaving BUET student Muhtasim Masud dead on the spot and two other BUET students -- Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan Khan, 22 -- seriously injured. All of them are the students of the Department of CSE of BUET.
Following the accident, police found a can of beer and an empty liquor bottle searching the private car. Later, Muhtasim Masud's father filed a case at Roopganj Police Station in connection with the incident under the Road Transport Act.
Police arrested three people in connection with the incident.
