BUET student's death: Two arrested found positive in dope test

Narayanganj Civil Surgeon Dr. AFM Moshiur Rahman confirmed the information on December 20 that dope tests were conducted at Narayanganj General Hospital (Victoria) earlier in the day. The tests, which examined the presence of alcohol in the arrestees' bodies, came back positive for Mubin Al Mamun and Mirajul Karim.  

The tests were prompted by the discovery of an empty bottle of liquor and a can of beer in Mubin's car, which he had been driving when the fatal crash occurred. Police suspected that Mubin was driving under the influence when the incident took place in the early hours of December 20, leaving Muhtasim dead and his two friends critically injured.  

Muhtasim, 22, a student of Buet's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and his friends, Amit Saha and Mehedi Hasan, also 22 and fellow BUET students, had been stopped by police at a checkpoint in Purbachal. While they were speaking to the officers, Mubin�s car crashed into their stationary motorcycle at the Nila Market intersection, killing Muhtasim instantly and injuring Amit and Mehedi.  

Muhtasim's father, Masud Mia, expressed his grief and anger over the incident, blaming the reckless driving of the youths for his son's death. "My son was stopped by some policemen at a check post in Purbachal� suddenly, these drunk youths drove their car recklessly and hit my son�s motorcycle," he said, demanding exemplary punishment for those responsible.  

Muhtasim�s father filed a case with Rupganj police later that day, and the three youths�Mubin, Mirajul, and Asif Chowdhury�were arrested and sent to court after the dope tests. The Narayanganj court sent them to jail and scheduled a hearing for Sunday.  

The tragic incident has sparked protests from BUET students, who have called the death a murder and made several demands, including a fair investigation, arresting the detainees, compensating the victim's family, and ensuring proper treatment for the injured.
