The Rapid Action Battalion, or RAB, has arrested Mohammad Nuruddin, the driver of the bus involved in the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway accident that claimed six lives.
He was detained from Narayanganj's Siddhirganj on Saturday midnight, said RAB-10 Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Tapash Karmakar. During preliminary questioning, the driver claimed he had lost control of the bus, according to Tapash.
"He said he wanted to stop the vehicle, but the brakes were not working. The engine shut off after the crash."
Nuruddin also admitted to fleeing the scene of the crash when a crowd started to gather, fearing the situation would worsen.
The RAB revealed that while Nuruddin holds a driving licence, it expired in 2022 and has not been renewed. Nuruddin is originally from Satkhira.
The accident occurred around 11:00am on Friday when a Bepari Paribahan bus travelling at high speed crashing into a stationary car in the Mawa-bound lane of the Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza in Keraniganj. A microbus and a motorcycle were also involved in the accident.
This marks the eighth fatal accident on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in the past week, with eight people killed and at least 30 others injured.
Meanwhile, AKM Aktharuzzaman Bosunia, Superintendent of Gazipur Highway Police, said that Nuruddin and another person were taken into custody on Saturday over the fatal incident.
