Police have arrested an expelled coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement in Feni, on charges of extortion, deception, and defamation on Tuesday.
The arrest took place after a case was filed against him at Feni Model Police Station.
Omar Faruk Shuvo, a resident of Jagatjibanpur village in Forhadnagar union under Feni Sadar upazil. In August, he was expelled from his position as co-coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement in Feni for violating organizational discipline. Despite his expulsion, he continued to identify himself as a "student coordinator" and participated in various events and meetings.
The charges stem from allegations that Shuvo demanded Tk 3 lakh from Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, the temporarily suspended principal of Feni Alia Kamil Madrasa. Shuvo allegedly promised to facilitate Hasan’s reinstatement to his position in exchange for the money.
A call recording of Shuvo's extortion demand went viral on social media on Tuesday, where he claimed to be acting on behalf of Abdul Kader and Hamza Mahbub, current coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement. He also mentioned Azizur Rahman Rizvi, a Dhaka University finance department student, as a mediator in the extortion.
Following the viral recording, Rizvi's father, Siddiqur Rahman, lodged a formal complaint against Shuvo. Based on this complaint, police conducted an operation and arrested Shuvo.
Marm Singh Tripura, the Officer-in-Charge of Feni Model Police Station, confirmed the arrest. He stated, "Shuvo will be sent to jail through the court on Wednesday." Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the allegations against Shuvo.
