A pregnant elephant died reportedly from electrocution after he trampled a farmer to death at Lama upazila in Bandarban district on Monday.
The incident took place on Monday night at in the remote area Chak Jatazhiri area under Fanshiakhali union of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Faridul Alam, 38, son of late Ali Ahmed, a resident of North Ghunia Pahartali area under the union.
According to locals, a herd of wild elephants attacked the paddy field which was being guarded by Faridul Alam. When he tried to intervent, the elephants trampled him to death. Later, a pregnant elephant of the herd fell into a electric trap and died on the spot when the locals chased them.
Lama Police Station officer-in-charge Md Shahdat Hossain said that they recovered the body and handed it over to the family members. However, there was no injury marks in the victim's body.
Lama Forest Department Range Officer AKM Ata Elahi confirmed the death of the elephant and said it is suspected that the wild animal died of electrocution. The department collected several evidences and sent to laboratory for autopsy.
A general diary (GD) has been filed in this regard, added the forest official.
