The death toll from the head-on collision between two speedboats in the Meghna River at Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj, has risen to three.
Initial reports suggested a collision between a speedboat and a bulkhead, but it has since been confirmed that two speedboats were involved.
The incident occurred on Friday (January 10) around 9:30 PM in the Meghna River near Guagachia union of the upazila, confirmed Gazaria Naval Police Outpost inspector Md. Mahbub Alam.
The deceased was identified as Abud Bepari, 35, son of Mamun Bepari of Guagachia union, Md. Babul, 38, also from the same area. The identity of the third victim has yet to be confirmed.
According to police, the collision occurred due to poor visibility caused by darkness and heavy fog. One speedboat failed to see the other in time, resulting in the crash. Local residents and fishermen rushed to the scene upon hearing the collision, and Naval Police arrived shortly thereafter.
Several passengers were rescued from the scene and taken to Gazaria Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Dr. Saima Akhter, Emergency Department physician of the hospital confirmed the deaths, adding that among the injured, two of them were brought dead. Meanwhile, another injured Abdul Halim, 34, was stabilized and referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
