A case has been filed against approximately 200 activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations for forcibly snatching an accused individual from Srinagar Police Station.
The incident occurred on Friday night when police arrested Mohammad Tarikul Islam, a member of Srinagar Upazila Jubo Dal Convening Committee, from the Dhaisa area. Tarikul was arrested in connection with an assault case recorded on November 19 under court orders.
Following his arrest, around 9:00 PM, nearly 150 leaders and activists from the BNP, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal gathered at the police station. They reportedly pressured the officer-in-charge Kaium Uddin Chowdhury to release Tarikul and began chanting slogans. Around 10:15 PM, the group allegedly broke into the second officer's room, attacked police personnel, vandalized property, and forcibly took Tariqul away while chanting slogans.
On Saturday, sub-inspector Abdur Razzak filed a case naming 31 individuals, including Jubo Dal convenor Joynal Abedin Mridha James, member secretary Mamunur Rashid, senior joint convenor Zahirul Islam Masud Rana, Chhatra Dal president Ashraful Islam Shuvo, general secretary Emdadul Haque Imon, and Swechchhasebak Dal member secretary Emdadul Islam Rajin. Another 160–170 unidentified individuals were also included in the case.
Additional Police Superintendent (Srinagar Circle) Anisur Rahman was present during the incident and tried to calm the crowd, emphasizing that Tarikul was a named suspect in a case and could not be released. Despite his efforts, the situation escalated into vandalism and violence.
Meanwhile, the president of Srinagar Upazila BNP, Md. Shahidul Islam and general secretary, Hafizul Islam Khan, issued a press statement on Saturday, stating, "If any individual commits a crime under the guise of party affiliation, Srinagar Upazila BNP will not take responsibility for their actions."
Efforts to locate and apprehend the accused and other perpetrators are ongoing.
