The collision occurred on Friday (January 10) at around 10 PM near Kalipura Ghat on the Meghna River.
According to reports, a trawler carrying passengers from an event in Matlab Uttar upazila was heading towards Gazaria's Guagachia area while a high-speed speedboat was traveling in the opposite direction. Both vessels carried 10–11 passengers. Due to heavy fog, the speedboat veered off course and collided with the trawler.
Due to the impact, the trawler sank and the speedboat was severely damaged. Three bodies were initially recovered but Nayeem remained missing until his body was found the following day.
Obaidul Karim Khan, Commander of Narayanganj Rescue Unit and Deputy Director of BIWTA, stated, "We were informed about a collision between a speedboat and a bulkhead. However, upon reaching the site, it was confirmed that a speedboat collided with a motorized trawler. The trawler sank and the speedboat sustained damage. We believe all deceased were passengers of the trawler."
Gazaria Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Anwar Alam Azad, said, "The collision occurred due to dense fog which led to the crash between a trawler and a high-speed speedboat. So far, four deaths have been confirmed. Further details will follow after an investigation."
