A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment and her lover to death for the murder of her husband on 2021.

The verdict was delivered on Sunday by Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Judge Masud Karim.

In addition to the sentences, both convicts were fined Tk 100,000 each. As both are currently fugitives, the court issued warrants for their arrest.

Another accused in the case, Saiful Islam alias Yusuf, was acquitted due to a lack of evidence. Yusuf was present in court when the judgment was announced.

According to case details, the convicted wife, Mosammat Sultana Akter Kamil, had been involved in an extramarital affair with another convicted Robiul Karim Pintu. Her husband, Elim Sarkar, discovered the affair, leading to a conspiracy between Sultana and Pintu to eliminate him. On the night of March 28, 2021, Pintu and Yusuf attacked Elim Sarkar at his residence in Sarkar Bari area of Ashulia in Dhaka, fatally stabbing him.

Following the incident, the victim's father, Haji Fasol Haque Sarkar, filed a case with the Ashulia police.

The investigation, conducted by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), culminated in a chargesheet being submitted to the court on August 29, 2022.

The trial formally began on April 16, 2023, with charges framed against the three accused. During the proceedings, the court recorded the testimonies of 15 out of 19 witnesses.
Sultana and Pintu both confessed to their involvement in the crime. Four defense witnesses also testified on behalf of the accused.

Prosecuting attorney Mosharraf Hossain expressed satisfaction with the verdict, describing it as a reflection of justice. The court emphasized the need to apprehend the fugitives promptly to enforce the ruling.
