A violent clash between the supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP in Kushtia district on Monday resulted in the death of a Jamaat activist and injuries to 18 others.
The incident occurred in the Mirpur upazila over a longstanding feud regarding the election of the president for the school managing committee at Murapara Secondary High School.
The deceased, identified as Khokon Molla, 35, was a resident of Burapara in the upazila.
According to Mominul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, the conflict stemmed from a rivalry between Nasim Reza Mukul, the Ameer of the Amla union Jamaat-e-Islami, and BNP activist Rashed Mahmud Nasir. Both were competing for the president position of the ad hoc committee of the school, which had been a source of tension in the area.
A meeting was scheduled on Monday morning at the school to resolve the issue, but tensions boiled over when both groups gathered, leading to the violent confrontation. The clash left 19 individuals injured, with six people requiring hospitalization at Mirpur Upazila Health Complex and the remaining injured receiving treatment at Kushtia General Hospital.
Tragically, Khokon Molla succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to Dhaka’s Ibn Sina Hospital. Jamaat-e-Islami leaders have condemned the killing and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
