Satkhira: Husband held over strangling newly-wed wife to death

A newly-wed woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband over a dowry dispute at Madhabkati village in Satkhira Sadar upazila.

The victim, identified as Khadiza Khatun, 19, had been married to Amirul Islam, a resident of the same village, just three months earlier.
According to the police, disputes between the couple had been escalating after Amirul demanded a dowry of Tk 2 lakh from Khadiza's family. When she refused to meet his demand, Amirul reportedly subjected her to both mental and physical abuse.

On Tuesday at around 3 AM, an argument erupted between the couple, during which Amirul struck Khadiza on the head with a stick. He then allegedly smothered her face with a pillow, strangling her to death.

Following the incident, local villagers confined Amirul to his house and alerted law enforcers. Police arrived at the scene, recovered Khadiza's body and arrested Amirul.

The body showed several signs of injury, indicating the severity of the assault before the fatal strangulation, according to the officer-in-charge of the local police station, Saminul Islam.
