A man was beaten to death reportedly by his nephews over a long-standing land dispute in Rangpur's Kaunia upazila.

The incident occurred at Gerdebalapara Chandervita area of Balapara union in the upazila on Tuesday night.

The victim was identified as Amzad Hossain, 55,  son of late Abdul Jabbar of Buddhir bazaar in Shahidbag union in the upazila.

Citing locals and family members, Kaunia Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Latif said that the conflict escalated when Amzad’s nephew, Shahidul, and his associates attempted to forcibly excavate land using heavy equipment. The land in question is under a legal dispute, with a case pending in Land Survey Court.

The confrontation began around 11:30 PM when Amzad Hossain opposed the excavation. Heated arguments ensued, leading Shahidul and his group to brutally attack Amzad with sticks.

Severely injured, Amzad was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex by his relatives and locals. He was later transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.

OC Abdul Latif stated that police have sent the body to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The victim's elder son, Raihan, has filed a murder case against 12 individuals and efforts are underway to arrest the suspects.
