2 held with smuggled sugar in Moulvibazar

The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested two alleged smugglers along with illegally smuggled Indian sugar from Moulvibazar Sadar upazila on Monday night.

The arrested are Yeasin Ali, 25, and Rifat Hasan Dipu, 22, both are residents of Jaintapur upazila in Sylhet district.

Acting on a tip-off, a DB team conducted a raid on a Comilla-bound truck from Sylhet and arrested the duo along with 9,400 kilograms of Indian sugar, approximately worth Tk 12 lakh. Police also seized the truck involved in the smuggling, said SI Mahmudur Rahman. 

During primary questoning, the duo said that they have collected the sugar from Jaintapur border area of Sylhet and supposed to sell the sugar to Cumilla.

Moulvibazar DB officer-in-charge Abul Kashem Sarker confirmed the incident and said that a complaint has been filed against them.
