Pabna: Road accident claims child's life on his birthday

A child was killed and 6 others were injured in a road accident at Santhia upazila in Pabna district on Friday.  

The deceased was identified as Sadib, 8, son of Faruk Hossain of Afra Nodishuka village in Karomja union of the upazila.

The accident, which occurred in the afternoon near Afra Shamukjani Bazar on the Santhia-Punduria road, also left six others injured, including a local journalist Ashik Iqbal Rasel, the assistant general secretary of Santhia Press Club and a correspondent for the daily Bhorer Dorpone.  

Among the injured, the auto-rickshaw driver, Mahtab Uddin, 50, a resident of Laxmipur village, was critically hurt and transferred from Santhia Upazila Health Complex to Pabna General Hospital due to his worsening condition.  

Local said that a CNG auto-rickshaw carrying passengers from Santhia was traveling towards Punduria. As it approached Afra Shamukjani bazaar area, Sadib suddenly dashed across the road. The driver, unable to control the vehicle, hit Sadib, leaving him severely injured. 

Locals rushed him to Bera Upazila Health Complex but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.  

Following the collision, the auto-rickshaw veered off the road, hit a tree, and overturned, injuring six passengers. 

Faruk Hossain, the grieving father, lamented, "Today was Sadib's birthday. We had planned to celebrate, but now we are left mourning his loss. There is no greater pain than this."  

Santhia Police Station officer-in-charge Saidur Rahman confirmed the incident, stating, "Police were sent to the scene upon receiving the news. If the family files a complaint, legal action will be taken."
