
A local chairman of Rajshahi's Bagha upazila was reportedly kidnapped in an attempt to extort ransom money.
The victim, Babul Monowar alias Babul Dewan, was a chairman of Chakrajapur Union Parishad (UP) in Bagha Upazila and the president of Chakrajapur Union Awami League,
According to locals, has been largely absent from his area since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. Since then, he has reportedly been residing with his family in a rented house in Rajshahi Metropolitan City.
The kidnapping reportedly took place on Wednesday evening from Saheb bazaar zero point in Rajshahi city. Babul Dewan was then taken to areas including Madrasa Math and T-Badh. He was eventually released in Binodpur early the next morning.
Boalia Police Station officer-in-charge Mehedi Masud stated, We were informed by Babul Dewans wife that he had been kidnapped and that the abductors demanded a ransom of four lakh taka. Upon receiving the information, we launched operations in various locations, prompting the kidnappers to release him.
When asked about the identity of the abductors, OC Mehedi Masud said, We are not yet certain who was behind the kidnapping, but it was likely carried out by local miscreants. If the family files a complaint, we will investigate and take appropriate action.
The family has yet to lodge any formal complaint regarding the incident.
