Language Movement veteran Ashraf Hossain laid to rest in Rangpur

A prominent figure of 1952 Language Movement, Ashraf Hossain Borda, was laid to rest at Nurpur Cemetery in Rangpur on Friday. 

Ashraf Hossain Borda, also a former convener of the Rangpur District BNP, was 85 years old and breathed his last on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The funeral prayer was held after Jummah prayers at a local mosque, followed by his burial at the Nurpur Cemetery. 

Despite his significant contributions to the nation, no government officials were present at his funeral and burial. However, political leaders and activists from BNP, Jamaat, the National Citizen Committee, and other organizations, along with relatives and well-wishers, attended the funeral. 

Born in Guptapara of Rangpur, Ashraf Hossain became involved in the Language Movement in 1952 while studying in eighth grade at Lalmonirhat High School. Due to his activism, he went into hiding in 1954. 

In 1955, he permanently settled in Rangpur, with his home at New Cross Road in Guptapara serving as his base of operations.  

Various political, social, and professional organizations expressed deep sorrow at his passing. Leaders from BNP, Jatiya Party, Rangpur Journalist Union (RPUJ), Rangpur City Press Club, Rangpur Reporters Club, and other associations paid tribute to the late activist.  

In their condolence messages, leaders described Ashraf Hossain Borda as an irreplaceable guardian whose contributions to the Language Movement and the nation will forever be remembered. His death marks the loss of a true patriot and an enduring symbol of Bangladesh�s history.
