
ANM Nasimunnabi, honours final year student of the Department of Electrical and Electrical Engineering of United International University, received the "Best Humanitarian Impact Award" at the 2016 IEEE International Women in Engineering (WIE) Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (WIECON-ECE 2016) held in All India Shviaji Memorial Society's Institute of Information Technology, Pune, Maharashtra, India during December 19-21, 2016.
He is the past chair of IEEE UIU Student Branch and currently volunteering as student representative for IEEE Bangladesh section. He is the team leader of the award-winning project "Smart Device for Visually Impaired People", and other contributors of this project are AmanUllah, AshikurRahman and Omiya Hassan - all of them are members of IEEE UIU Student Branch.
A total of 40 Humanitarian projects from Asia-Pacific region were presented at the Humanitarian Track of the Conference, which was sponsored by Humanitarian Activity Committee of IEEE - world's largest non-profit association, based in the US and working for advancing technology for humanity.
The project Nasimunnabi has presented was to assist visually challenged people with audible information about the object and location. The device takes snapshots of the object and says the exact name of the object - also it says the name of the location by taking latitude and longitude from the GPS of user's smartphone/watch. The device is able to help user with navigation, detecting objects in-front of the user. Blind people can use the device whether they are walking or riding a vehicle, also they can use the device to determine and verify the correct travel route and thus it enhances the traveling experience of people who are blind.
