5 kidnapping-gang members held in Gopalganj

Five alleged members of a kidnapping-gang were apprehended by locals and handed over to police in Gopalganj Sadar upazlia on Sunday.

The detainees are Sifat Khan, 35, Sabbir Khan, 23, Wahidul Kazi, 27, Sahabul Sheikh, 25, and Sagar Mollah of the same upazila.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mir Md Sazedur Rahman confirmed the detention.

Citing locals, the OC said that a local Union Parishad (UP) chairman Nazib Ahmed was informed that a youth was kidnapped and being assaulted by the accused at Domrashur village. They also demanded ransom to free him.

Being informed, Nazib along with others rushed there and rescued the victim and apprehended five of the gang members. However, eight others were managed to escape from the scene, he said.

Later, police took the accused in custody and launched an operation to arrest the others, added the OC.
