3 jailed, fined over illegal sand extraction in Sherpur

A mobile court in a drive sentenced three individuals to three months of imprisonment reportedly for extracting sand illegally from the Bhogai River at Nalitabari upazila in Sherpur on Sunday.

During the drive, the court also destoryed 20 sand extraction towers and numerous pipes.

The convicted --Abu Ishak, 21, Babu, 22, and Tanvir Mahtab Jhinuk, 21,--- were handed over to the police. 

The operation took place at Ghona Para and Choyani para area of Gobindonagar area in the upazila.  

The operation, led by Nalitabari Upazila Nirbahi Officer(UNO) Farzana Akter Boby and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Anisur Rahman, targeted unauthorized sand extraction from the river.

�We will continue these types of raids to prevent illegal sand extraction and protect the environment and rivers�, said the UNO.
