2 killed as truck rams van in Jashore

Two people were killed and two others injured in a crash between a truck and a battery-operated van in Jashore's Monirampur upazila on Tuesday. 

The accident occurred on the Jashore-Chuknagar highway around 2:30 PM on Tuesday near Monirampur Hospital intersection.

According to locals, a cargo truck heading towards Jashore collided head-on with a van crossing the road. The van, carrying two women and a child, was completely crushed in the impact. 

The van driver, Moslem Hossain, 55, of Fedaypur village, died on the spot. Another passenger, Rupa Khatun, 45, wife of Robiul Islam of Munshikhonpur village, succumbed to her injuries after being taken to the hospital.

Two other passengers, Mim Khatun (22) from Narail district and her one-year-old child, sustained severe injuries. They were rushed to Jashore General Hospital for advanced treatment.

Upon receiving the news, Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene, followed by the police. Monirampur Fire Service and Civil Defense Officer Safayet stated, "We recovered one body from under the truck. Another woman, Rupa, died at the hospital due to critical injuries."

Dr. Saifuddin, the on-duty physician at Monirampur Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the two victims were dead before reaching the hospital. He added that the injured mother and child were referred for further treatment.

Monirampur Police Station sub-inspector Amit Kumar Das reported that the truck involved in the accident had been seized with the help of local residents. 

However, the truck driver fled the scene. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are underway, he added.
