AL leader held in Laxmipur over attack on students

A local Awami League (AL) leader was arrested reportedly for attacking on students during the recent Anti Discrimination Students Movement at Ramganj upazila in Laxmipur district on Monday evening.

The arrested is Rakibul Hasan, from Dakshin Chandipur area of the upazila and a joint secretary of Ramganj upazila AL unit.

According to police sources, Rakibul was involved in attack on anti-discrimination students on August 4. Now he is circulating provocative rumours on social media against current interim government. Apart from this, there are also allegations of criminal activities against him in various places. 

Following the allegations, a team of police arrested him from Fatehpur area of the upazila under Anti Terrorism Act, 2009. 

Confirming the detention, Ramganj Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Abul Basar said that Rakibul has been arrested in a case of attack on anti-discrimination students and sent to jail through a court. 

Drives are underway to arrest other accused, he added.
