Tannery workers' continue protest in Savar

Tannery workers have staged a demonstration abstaining from work at Savar in Dhaka for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, demanding minimum wage implementation.

The workers from BSCIC Leather Industrial City at Harindhara area, staged the demonstration around 10:00 AM demanding immediate implementation of the government-announced minimum wage for them in 5 grades.

The protesting workers said that the minimum wage was implemented soon after the announcement of the minimum wage for the workers in other sectors but no decision was yet to be taken for the tannery workers by the owners.

The owners are only wasting time by making various excuses. Finding no way, the workers have decided to demand their demands through the protest.

They warned that they would intensify their demonstration if their demands were not met by the next two days, they added.

Among the demands of the tannery workers are--ensuring implementation of labor laws in every factory, providing workers with employment letters and identity cards with photos, no temporary workers can be hired for permanent jobs, ensuring the rights of workers to freely form trade unions in accordance with ILO Conventions 87 and 98 and ensuring effective solid and liquid waste management in the tannery industry and ensure social compliance.
