
As part of the government's ongoing efforts to ensure eco-friendly industrialization, energy efficiency, waste management, and sustainable development, PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Limited (PHP SBRIL) has been awarded the Green Factory Award 2025.
The award was presented on Tuesday at a ceremony at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, organised by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The award ceremony was attended by Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. Shakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, as the chief guest and AHM Shafiquzzaman, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment in the chair.
PHP Family Chairman and Ekushey Padak recipient Alhaj Sufi Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, along with Managing Director Md. Zahirul Islam Rinku, received the award on behalf of the company.
This year, 30 companies from various sectors including garments, textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals, food processing, steel, ship-breaking, ship-building were recognized for their commitment to sustainable practices, energy efficiency, waste management, and improved workplace conditions.
Meanwhile, established in November 2000, PHP SBRIL has established itself as one of the most environmentally responsible ship recycling companies in Bangladesh.
Operated under the PHP family philosophy of happiness, peace and prosperity, the company is dedicated to sustainable growth, labor protection and environmental protection. It employs 277 workers and adheres to global standards, including the Hong Kong Convention 2009 and the ILO Labor Protection Guidelines.
PHP SBRIL has recycled several globally certified green ships, including Brazil’s Vale’s Ore Vitória in 2018 and Japan’s NYK Line’s MV KAMO in 2023, Bangladesh’s first direct ship recycling project with Japan. The company maintains strict protocols, including asbestos and hazardous waste management, a zero emission policy, and an extensive inventory of hazardous materials (IHM).
Worker Safety and Human Resource Development PHP SBRIL places utmost importance on worker safety, healthcare, and training.
Among other awardees were Dhaka Textile, Ecotex, Fakir Fashion, Tarasima Apparels, Auko Tex, and Square Fashions in garments; Akij Textile, Pioneer Denim, KDS Textile Mills, and Four H Dyeing and Printing in textiles, Transcom Electronics, Fair Electronics, and Walton Hi-Tech Industries in electronics, Akij Food and Beverage and Habiganj Agro in food and beverages, Zerin Tea Garden and Mirzapur Tea Garden in tea, Pragoti Industries in automobiles, Adzi Trims in accessories, Shoeniverse Footwear in leather, Karupannya Rangpur in jute, X Ceramics in tiles, Remark HB and Square Toiletries in cosmetics, SK+F Pharmaceuticals in pharmaceuticals, KR Ship Recycling Yard in ship-breaking, Khulna Shipyard in shipbuilding, BSRM Steels in steel, and Seven Circle Bangladesh in cement.
Among others Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Omar Md. Imrul Mohsin, Inspector General of the Factories and Institutions Inspection Department were present on the occasion.
