Under the floodlights of the Bashundhara Kings Arena on Monday evening, Bangladesh etched a new chapter of its footballing history, overpowering Nepal 4-0 in what had become the unofficial final match of the SAFF U-20 Women's Championship 2025.
It was Bangladesh's second trophy of the tournament. Bangladesh won the previous events in 2023.
On Monday, in a display of sheer brilliance, right wingerSagorika emerged as the evening's undisputed heroine, netting all four goals in a commanding performance that sealed the title for the host nation.
The contest began with palpable tension with Nepal needing nothing short of a victory while a draw would have sufficed for Bangladesh. Yet, from the outset, it was clear the reigning champions were not content to settle for anything less than an emphatic triumph.
Although Bangladesh women needed only one point to win the trophy, they knew what was in the stake and could not depend on the statistics or a draw against a powerful opponent like Nepal.
That's why Bangladesh was more focused on an allout performance on the ground to score quickly and take control over the condition.
The breakthrough arrived as early as the eighth minute, when striker Puja Das floated a well-weighted pass toward the right flank. Sagorika, swift as the wind and composed as a seasoned winger, carried the ball with purpose before slipping it past Nepalese goalkeeper Sujata Tamang with clinical precision.
After the interval, the momentum only intensified. In the 51st minute, Sagorika doubled the lead, replicating her earlier magic, racing down the right corridor and coolly dispatching the ball into the back of the net.
The crowd, already in raptures, had barely settled when, in the 58th minute, she completed her hat-trick, outwitting Nepalese defender Anisha Rai with nimble footwork and lofting the ball over the onrushing custodian to rattle the post and ripple the net.
By the 77th minute, the match had taken on the shape of a coronation. Sagorika, in a move as poetic as it was clinical, danced past the fatigued Nepalese defence, glided into the box, and with the lightest of touches, slotted the ball past the stranded keeper her fourth, and Bangladesh's final blow.
Nepal, who had come into the encounter with high hopes following a dominant victory over Bhutan, were left stunned and outclassed. The Bangladeshi backline, disciplined and resolute, ensured there was no way back for their opponents.
