Pabna’s ancient Vishnu idol handed over to archaeology department

An ancient Vishnu idol, which was recovered from a pond at Chatmohar upazila in Pabna district has been handed over to the Department of Archaeology on Tuesday.

The black stone idol was transferred from Handial Police Investigation Center of Chatmohar upazila to AKM Oman, Director of the Bogra Regional Office of the Department of Archaeology On Tuesday.

Chatmohar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Musa Naser Chowdhury was present during the handover, along with the pond owner, Lokman Hossain.

Confirming the incident, Puthia Royal Palace Assistant Custodian Md Hafizur Rahman said that the recovered Vishnu idol measures 26.5 inches in length and 12.5 inches in width. The deity-carved idol is made of a priceless stone.

UNO Musa Naser Chowdhury informed that the idol is approximately one and a half thousand years old and could date back to the Pala or Sena period.

Earlier on July 25, the rare Vishnu idol was discovered by Lokman Hossain while fishing in his pond at Majgram village under Nimai Chara union of the upazila.
