Ex-AL minister Ramesh Chandra dies in jail

THAKURGAON, Jan 7: Former Water Resources Minister and five-time Member of Parliament for Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar Upazila) constituency Ramesh Chandra Sen died due to illness while in custody at Dinajpur District Jail on Saturday. He was 84.

According to Dinajpur District Jail Superintendent Md Farhad Sarkar, Sen was declared dead at 9:29am by physicians at the emergency department of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.
 
Jail and hospital sources said Ramesh Chandra Sen fell ill on Saturday morning. He was taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital from the jail at around 9:10am where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.

Officials at the jail said Sen had been in custody in connection with three cases, including a murder case. He was arrested by Thakurgaon police on August 16 and sent to jail following a court order. The following day, he was transferred to Dinajpur District Jail, where he remained imprisoned until his death.

Born on April 30, 1940, in Kashalgaon village of Ruhia Union under Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, Ramesh Chandra Sen was the son of Kshitindra Mohan Sen and Balashwari Sen. He received his higher education from Rangpur Carmichael College.

A senior leader of the Bangladesh Awami League, Sen served as a presidium member of the party and was elected to parliament five times. Most recently, he won the Thakurgaon-1 seat in the 2024 general election after securing the Awami League nomination.

His death has drawn attention locally, marking the end of a long political career that spanned several decades.
