Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday told Parliament that a total of Tk 75,903 crore has been provided to banks as emergency liquidity support till June 6 last.

He came up with the information while replying to a starred question from treasury bench member Musammat Shammi Akther (Women Seat-22) in the House with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad in the chair, reports UNB.

The minister said Bangladesh Bank is providing emergency liquidity support at different times to the banks that are unable to return the depositors’ money due to the liquidity crisis.

“A total of Tk 75,903.11 crore has been provided to banks as emergency liquidity assistance till June 6,” he said.

Khosru, however, said no liquidity support is provided to financial institutions that face such crisis.

He said the government has enacted the Bank Resolution Act, 2026 to determine what to do about the banks and financial institutions facing liquidity crisis.

In line with the new law, the government is taking multifaceted measures to address the liquidity crisis faced by the banks and financial institutions, the minister added.

Responding to a question from BNP lawmaker Rahana Akter Ranu, he said the central bank has declared five banks ineffective and brought under the resolution in a bid to protect the interests of clients.

The five banks are Exim Bank PLC, First Security Islami Bank PLC, Global Islami Bank PLC, Social Islami Bank PLC and Union Bank PLC.

The depositors of Sammilito Islami Bank PLC are being paid as per the terms of the Bank Resolution Scheme, 2025, said Khosru.

Besides, the limit of protected deposits under the Deposit Protection Act, 2026 has been increased from Tk 1 lakh to Tk 2 lakh.

Tk 12,000 crore has already been given from the Deposit Protection Fund (Bank Companies) as per the current account of Sammilito Islami Bank, he added.
