Shakira turns World Cup anthem into a voice for millions of children

The FIFA World Cup is usually remembered for breathtaking goals, passionate supporters and unforgettable matches. This year, however, one of the tournament's most meaningful moments came before the football even began, as global pop star Shakira used the opening ceremony to shine a spotlight on millions of children who remain without access to quality education.

Taking centre stage with the official World Cup anthem, "Dai Dai," Shakira delivered a performance that blended entertainment with purpose. Rather than focusing solely on the excitement of football, the show highlighted a broader message"that the world's biggest sporting event can also inspire positive social change.

The anthem is linked to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative designed to expand educational opportunities for children living in disadvantaged communities. The campaign aims to mobilise global support so that more young people, regardless of where they are born, can receive an education while also enjoying the benefits of sport.

For Shakira, the message is deeply personal. Throughout her career, she has consistently championed children's education through charitable work, particularly in Latin America. Her appearance at the World Cup therefore reflected a long-standing commitment rather than a one-off campaign tied to football.

The symbolism of the performance resonated with audiences around the world. While the tournament celebrates elite athletes competing for football's greatest prize, the opening ceremony reminded viewers that millions of children are still fighting a very different battle"the chance to attend school, learn and build a better future.

The World Cup has often been described as a global language capable of uniting people across cultures and borders. By placing children's education at the heart of its opening celebration, FIFA and its partners attempted to demonstrate that football's influence extends far beyond the pitch.

As the tournament unfolds, fans will continue to celebrate dramatic matches and spectacular goals. Yet the image of Shakira using football's biggest stage to advocate for children's futures may prove to be one of the World Cup's most enduring moments.

In a competition built on dreams of lifting the trophy, the opening ceremony also served as a reminder that the greatest victory may be giving every child the opportunity to dream in the first place.
