Police have moved several people to safety, including Dhaka University's Professor AKM Jamal Uddin, after they were reportedly assaulted and harassed while attempting to pay their respects at Dhanmondi 32.

The incident occurred around 4:45pm on Sunday, when a woman and a group led by Prof Jamal arrived at the historic site to lay floral wreaths. Witnesses saw a middle-aged woman delivering a speech through a megaphone, accompanied by her daughter.

When police officers took away the loudspeaker and requested that she leave the premises, a heated altercation ensued.

Addressing police via a hand mike, the woman said: "I cannot accept, as a citizen of this country, the way [Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman] has been dishonoured and how Dhanmondi 32 has been vandalised. "It was Bangabandhu who brought independence to this nation." Shortly after, Prof Jamal and several others arrived with flowers. Police promptly escorted them away from the site. The remaining crowd dispersed after the authorities removed other protesters.

Zishanul Haque, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Dhanmondi Division, told bdnews24.com: "An incensed 'mob' attacked and assaulted them upon their arrival."    "bdnews24
