Education system to be overhauled to focus on skills, jobs: Milon

Primary and Mass Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Saturday stressed the need to restructure the country’s education system to make it skill-based, employment-oriented and aligned with modern demands.

“The prevailing conventional education system is contributing to rising unemployment,” he said, adding that reforms are underway to better equip students with practical skills and improve their employability.

Milon made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion organised by Primary and Mass Education Ministry at PTI in Mirpur, marking Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.

He said education should help build a skilled workforce rather than increase unemployment.

“The expansion of skill-based education remains insufficient compared to actual demand. The system will be redesigned to nurture students as competent, employable and productive individuals,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of the mother tongue, the minister said Bengali is central to the nation’s thoughts and emotions. However, in the era of globalisation, he noted that learning English as a second language is essential to enhance linguistic proficiency.

He also said the government would take effective steps to preserve and promote the languages of the country’s small ethnic communities.

Speaking as special guest, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj announced a “zero tolerance” policy against corruption in all departments under the ministry. “No room for corruption will be allowed in the next five years,” he said.

Bobby identified curriculum, classroom and consistency as three key pillars for improving education quality and expressed commitment to ensuring effective coordination among Bengali-medium, English-medium, technical and madrasah education systems.
