Govt appoints administrators to 6 city corporations

The government has appointed full-time administrators to six city corporations, including Dhaka North and Dhaka South.

Confirming the information, an official gazette notification was issued on Sunday 22 February from the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

Under the new appointments, Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan has been named administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation, while Md. Abdus Salam has been appointed to lead Dhaka South City Corporation.

Nazrul Islam Monju has been assigned as administrator of Khulna City Corporation and Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury has been appointed to the same role in Sylhet City Corporation.

For Narayanganj City Corporation, Md. Shakhawat Hossain Khan has been given the administrator's post, while Md. Shawkat Hossain Sarkar has been appointed administrator of Gazipur City Corporation.

The gazette notification, signed by Joint Secretary Mahbuba Aireen, stated that the appointments were made under Sub-section 1 of Section 25(Ka) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance 2024. The administrators will serve until the respective corporations are formally constituted or until further orders are issued.

According to Sub-section 3 of Section 25(Ka) of the same ordinance, the newly appointed administrators will exercise all powers and perform all duties of the mayor of their respective city corporations. They will also be entitled to allowances as prescribed by the rules.

The notification confirmed that the order, issued in the public interest, takes effect immediately.
