Two youths were killed after being hit by a running train while taking selfies near a railway bridge in Sirajganj’s Ullapara upazila on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Faisal Kabir, 25, son of Akter Hossain, and Al Fesani, 24, son of Abdul Latif Pramanik. Both were residents of Belkuchi upazila in the district and were reportedly cousins.

According to locals, the two youths had gone to the Ghatina railway bridge area along the Dhaka–Ishwardi railway line to enjoy the scenic view of blooming shimul flowers. The rows of shimul trees on both sides of the bridge attract many visitors during the spring season.

Witnesses said the youths parked their motorcycles near the bridge and climbed onto it to take photos and selfies with the flower garden in the background. At one stage, a Dhaka-bound high-speed train suddenly approached the bridge.

As they attempted to move away, both were struck by the train. Faisal Kabir died on the spot, while Al Fesani sustained critical injuries.

Later, locals rescued the injured and rushed him to Ullapara Upazila Health Complex and later referred him to Sirajganj General Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

Police later recovered the bodies and brought them to the station.

Sirajganj Bazar Railway Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Dulal Uddin said the blooming shimul flowers around the Ghatina railway bridge have recently become a popular attraction, drawing many visitors who come to enjoy the view and take photographs.

Ullapara Model Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Moklesur Rahman confirmed the incident, saying necessary legal procedures are underway.
