Five Bangladeshi nationals were killed and two others seriously injured in a gas cylinder explosion at workers’ quarters of an under-construction building on Dhigurah Island in the Maldives.

The Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives confirmed the incident on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Taj Uddin Islam, Md Sadar Ali, Md Robin Molla, Shafiqul Islam and Md Nurnabi Sarker.

Two other workers — Jamal Uddin and Saddam Hossain — sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at IGM Hospital in Malé.

Officials from the Bangladesh High Commission have contacted the injured workers and are closely monitoring their condition.

The mission also said necessary steps are being taken to send the bodies of the deceased back to Bangladesh as soon as possible.
