BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called for comprehensive and objective research on the life, ideology and contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, saying that his role in nation-building has not been adequately documented.
Speaking at a discussion titled “Mass Media and Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman” at Press Club, Fakhrul said detailed academic and state-sponsored research was needed to properly present Ziaur Rahman’s legacy to future generations.
He said Zia introduced “Bangladeshi nationalism,” restored multi-party democracy after 1975, and played a key role in rebuilding the country’s economy, which he described as having been in a fragile state at the time.
Fakhrul also praised Zia’s contributions to agriculture, education, culture and foreign relations, and highlighted initiatives such as irrigation development and reforms in research institutions.
Recalling personal anecdotes, he described Zia as a leader closely connected to ordinary people, adding that public grief following his death reflected his popularity, which was also reported internationally.
The BNP leader further criticised what he termed media bias during previous regimes and stressed the need for independent and professional journalism.
The event was chaired by Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, while General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan moderated the session. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon attended as special guest, along with journalists and media representatives.
