Sudden thunderstorms, strong winds and intense hailstorms swept across the country, including the capital Dhaka, on Friday evening, claiming three lives and disrupting normal life.
The storm began after sunset, bringing both relief from recent high temperatures and hardship for commuters and outdoor workers.
The fierce squall lasted approximately 30 minutes, with lightning illuminating the sky before strong winds and large hailstones struck several areas. Significant hailstorms were reported in Dhaka's Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi and Moghbazar areas, with reports of trees being uprooted in some places.
The unseasonable weather brought a sudden return of winter-like chill, and the city's homeless and day laborers were forced to scramble for shelter under buildings and sheds.
The storm claimed the life of a school student in Thakurgaon and two others were killed in a lightning strike in Netrokona, according to initial reports.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department had earlier forecast the weather change. In its 120-hour forecast issued at 6 pm Friday, the Met Office said a normal seasonal low-pressure system was situated over the South Bay of Bengal.
Under its influence, parts of Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, and a few places in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions could experience temporary gusty winds and rain or thundershowers with lightning.
The forecast for Saturday indicated a continued possibility of gusty winds and thundershowers in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, and isolated places in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram. Daytime temperatures are expected to decrease slightly, while nighttime temperatures may rise slightly.
