Government has decided to relocate four major inter-district bus terminals from central Dhaka to the outskirts as part of an urgent plan to reduce traffic congestion and modernise the city’s transport management system.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting on traffic management and urban mobility held on Monday at the Cabinet Division conference room, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

According to Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Hasan Shiplu, the meeting focused on easing Dhaka’s growing traffic pressure through structural reforms, including the relocation of bus terminals and introduction of advanced traffic control systems.

The four inter-district bus terminals identified for relocation are Fulbaria-Gulistan, Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Sayedabad-Jatrabari terminals.

Under the approved plan, the Fulbaria-Gulistan terminal will be shifted to Keraniganj, while the Gabtoli terminal will be relocated to Hemayetpur. The Sayedabad-Jatrabari terminal will be moved to Kanchpur, and the Mohakhali terminal will be temporarily shifted to the eastern region before being permanently relocated near Tongi.

Officials said the Prime Minister also directed the removal of scattered bus counters across the capital and their relocation to designated areas to improve traffic discipline.

The meeting further discussed modernisation of traffic management through the use of artificial intelligence-based camera systems and smart signalling technology. The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the initial results of AI-based traffic signal monitoring.

Senior ministers, advisers and officials from relevant ministries, Dhaka South and North City Corporations, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and law enforcement agencies attended the meeting.

Government said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernise Dhaka’s transport infrastructure and ensure long-term relief from chronic congestion.
