At least 15 individuals, including several women, were injured in a clash between two rival groups over a land dispute in Bhola Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 5:15 PM near Haji Bari gate, adjacent to Mosque Market in Ward No. 4 of Char Samaiya union. The injured were rescued and taken to Bhola General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
According to locals, the violence stemmed from a long-running dispute between Saidul Haque and Md Mofiz over approximately 2.5 decimals of land. In an effort to resolve the issue, both groups had convened an arbitration meeting in the presence of local community leaders.
However, tensions escalated during the proceedings, leading to a heated exchange of words that quickly turned into a physical confrontation. Witnesses said members of both groups, including men and women, engaged in the clash using sticks.
Those injured from Saidul Haque’s group include Abbas, Minara, Nahida, Shamsuddin, Rasel, Nuruddin, Mehedi and Huzayfa. From Md Mofiz’s group, the injured are Rasel, Mofiz, Nahar Shakil, Sharif and Raisul.
Both sides have accused each other of initiating the attack. A representative from Mofiz’s group alleged that the attack was premeditated by Saidul Haque’s supporters, while the opposing group claimed that Mofiz’s group had forcibly occupied the disputed land and initiated the violence during its measurement.
One of the mediators, Ahmad Ullah, said the clash broke out following a verbal altercation, adding that the mediators were not present at the exact moment the violence erupted. Police visited the scene after being informed.
Confirming the incident, Bhola Model Police Station officer-in-charge (Investigation) Md Zia Uddin said no written complaint has yet been filed.
“We will take necessary legal action following an investigation once a complaint is lodged,” he said.
