The nation on Thursday observed the 56th Independence and National Day with due respect, paying homage to the martyrs of 1971 Liberation War whose sacrifices led to the birth of an independent Bangladesh.
March 26 marks the beginning of the country’s struggle for freedom following the tragic night of March 25, 1971, which ushered in a nine-month war that culminated in victory on December 16.
People from all walks of life gathered at the National Memorial in Savar from early morning to lay wreaths in tribute to the fallen heroes.
The Shaheed Bedi was soon covered with flowers as political leaders, social organizations and citizens arrived in groups carrying national flags, banners, and festoons, many dressed in red and green.
President Mohammad Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also paid homage by placing wreaths at the memorial.
They were joined by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, cabinet members, service chiefs, senior political leaders, diplomats and families of martyrs.
The government marked the day with elaborate programmes across the country.
The day began with gun salutes at dawn, followed by the hoisting of the national flag at government and private establishments. Official ceremonies at divisional, district and upazila levels included the national anthem, parades and student performances.
Educational institutions organised essay writing, recitation, and painting competitions, alongside discussions highlighting the significance of Independence Day.
Cultural programmes, sports events, and exhibitions were also held nationwide.
Television and radio stations aired special programmes on the Liberation War, while films on the liberation war were screened free of charge. Museums remained open to the public, and various recreational centres welcomed visitors, particularly children.
Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches and other places of worship for the souls of the martyrs and the peace and progress of the nation.
Meals were arranged in hospitals, prisons, orphanages, and welfare centres to mark the occasion.
Bangladesh missions abroad also observed the day with similar programmes.
Across districts, the day was marked with rallies, parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and cultural events. In Shariatpur, Tangail, Bogura, Sherpur, Feni, Munshiganj, Bagerhat and Netrokona, local administration, freedom fighters and citizens participated in tributes, student activities and community programmes.
Through these nationwide observances, people reaffirmed their respect for the martyrs and the values of independence, while inspiring the younger generation to uphold patriotism, unity and social justice.
