Jet fuel price jumps to Tk 227 per litre

The government has raised jet fuel prices for the second time in less than a month, increasing the domestic rate by nearly 25 taka per litre to 227.08 taka.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the new pricing in an official notification on Tuesday, with the revised rates taking effect from midnight. 

The regulator cited rising international fuel prices, increased import costs, and the need to align with prevailing market conditions as reasons behind the adjustment. The new rates will remain in force until further notice, the commission said.

The latest increase follows a sharp 90-taka hike implemented on March 24, meaning jet fuel prices have more than doubled within weeks. 

Before the March revision, domestic jet fuel was sold at 112.41 taka per litre. It then jumped to 202.29 taka and has now climbed to 227.08 taka, representing a cumulative increase of over 100 percent in a remarkably short period.

International flight fuel rates have also seen a significant rise. The price per litre has been increased from 1.3216 US dollars to 1.4806 dollars. 

Before the March adjustment, the international rate stood at just 0.7384 dollars per litre, meaning the price has now doubled for foreign carriers as well.

Industry stakeholders have expressed serious concern that the successive hikes will force airlines to raise ticket prices on both domestic and international routes, placing additional financial burden on passengers.
