Follow-up needed as u-20 women booters return empty-handed

Bangladesh's Under-20 women's team arrived back in Dhaka on Wednesday after a disappointing group-stage exit from the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup in Thailand, compounding the senior team's identical fate one month earlier. Coached by Peter Butler, both sides suffered six consecutive defeats at Asian level, highlighting persistent gaps in competitiveness.

Despite flashes of promise, notably a 2-0 lead against Thailand through Mosammat Sagorika's brace, undone by late defensive collapse, Bangladesh lost 3-2 to the hosts, 2-0 to China and 1-0 to Vietnam. The final narrow defeat ended any slim hope of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.

In the immediate aftermath, the campaign leaves a sense of missed opportunity. Qualification would have secured a historic berth at the U-20 World Cup, offering invaluable global exposure. Instead, the results reinforce the chasm between South Asian and stronger East and Southeast Asian nations, with defensive fragility and inability to protect leads proving costly.

As the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) always says that the way forward is clear. These "learning experiences" must move beyond rhetoric. Priorities include structured long-term youth development programmes, enhanced domestic leagues for regular high-level competition, targeted defensive training, and consistent exposure to stronger opponents through friendlies and regional tournaments. Investment in grassroots coaching, fitness standards and mental resilience will be essential.

Without deliberate follow-up, the valuable on-pitch education risks remaining theoretical. Real progress demands sustained commitment to close the gap and turn potential into consistent results at continental level.
