A young man was arrested in Jamalpur district over allegedly masterminding an online fraud scheme targeting a teenage girl using fake “spiritual healing” services.

The arrested is Monir Hossain, 21, a content creator by profession.

According to Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) sources, a 13-year-old girl from Sherpur, was lured through social media by a spiritual healer named “Khurshid Kabiraj.”

The fraudsters promised to solve personal problems and convinced her to send money and valuables over several days in March.

The group reportedly collected over Tk 2.4 lakh via mobile payments and later took approximately 27.5 bhori of gold ornaments and Tk 1 lakh in cash under the pretence of conducting rituals.

The scam was uncovered when a shopkeeper became suspicious of the minor sending money and informed her father, who then filed a case with Sherpur Sadar Police Station.

PBI police super Pankaj Datta said they arrested two accomplices earlier and later detained Monir Hossain from Mymensingh.

Authorities recovered 5 mobile phones and gold ornaments worth almost Tk 64 lakh buried near his residence, he added.

He also confirmed that the so-called “Khurshid Kabiraj” does not exist and was a fabricated identity used to carry out the fraud.

The accused has been sent to court for further legal proceedings, the official added.
