Tensions flare at Jamalpur border over failed 'push-in' attempt

Renewed tensions erupted at Ramrampur border in Jamalpur's Bakshiganj upazila on Wednesday following an alleged attempt by Indian authorities to forcibly push an unidentified man into Bangladesh.

The incident led to a standoff between border guards and a confrontation between citizens of both countries.

The unrest began Wednesday morning when Border Security Force (BSF) personnel reportedly tried to push a 60-year-old man into Bangladesh near Pillar No. 1082.

Facing resistance from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local villagers, BSF abandoned the individual at the "no-man's-land" or zero-line.

Although the man attempted to cross the border, he was blocked by BGB and locals, forcing him back to the zero-line.

Tensions escalated further after a flag meeting between BGB and BSF failed to resolve the issue, as neither side agreed to take responsibility for the man.

At approximately 5:00 PM, a clash broke out between citizens of the two nations across the barbed-wire fence.

Locals reported that Indian youths began throwing stones at Bangladeshis, sparking a counter-response. Indian nationals eventually retreated following the resistance from the Bangladeshi side.

Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, commander of the Jamalpur-35 BGB, urged citizens of both countries to remain behind the zero-line and maintain peace.

He also called on local residents to continue cooperating with the BGB to ensure border security and prevent illegal entry.
