Jamaat-led alliance picks 13 for JS reserved seats

The 11-party electoral alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Monday announced names of candidates for 13 reserved seats.

The list was formally announced  by Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, coordinator of the 11-party electoral unity, at a function held at the Jamaat e Islami central office in Moghbazar.

According to the allocation, eight nominees are from Jamaat, two from the National Citizen Party (NCP), and one each from the National Democratic Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis and a representative of a July martyr's family.

The Jamaat nominees are:  Nurunnisa Siddika, Marzia Begum, Advocate Sabikunnahar Munni, Nazmun Nahar Nilu, Professor Mahfuza Hannan, Sajeda Samad, Shamsunnahar Begum and Engineer Mardia Momtaz. 

From the NCP, Monira Sharmin and Dr Mahmuda Alam Mitu have been nominated.

Besides,  Barrister Tasmia Pradhan has been nominated from the National Democratic Party, while Engineer Mahbuba Hakim represents Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis. 

Rokeya Begum, mother of July martyr Jabir Ibrahim, has been nominated as a representative of a martyr's family.
In the parliamentary election held on 12 February, the 11-party alliance secured 77 seats, entitling it to 13 of the 50 reserved women's seats under proportional allocation. 

And by comparison, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led alliance secured 36 reserved seats, while independent members are entitled to nominate for one seat.

Jamaat Women's Division Secretary Nurunnisa Siddika said the nomination papers would be formally submitted to the Election Commission (EC) within the stipulated deadline and confirmed that the candidates have already been notified.
