With a quiet sense of purpose and the nation's hopes tucked into their kit bags, Bangladesh's athletics contingent departed the capital on Monday night to take part in the forthcoming Asian Beach Games 2026, scheduled to be held in Sanya from 22 to 30 April.
The red-and-green athletics brigade, lean yet determined, comprises two athletes and one official. Sprinter Abdul Motaleb and the country's fastest woman, Sumaiya Dewan, will carry Bangladesh's flag in the Beach Athletics discipline, while MM Nazir Ahmed, an executive member of the Bangladesh Athletics Federation, accompanies the team in an official capacity.
The duo will test their mettle in the 60-metre sprint event, set against the unique and demanding backdrop of sand tracks, a format that often turns conventional sprinting wisdom on its head. The heats and finals are slated for 24 April, with the women's heats commencing at 09:00 local time, followed by the men's at 09:30. Finals will unfold later in the morning, where fractions of a second may well separate glory from heartbreak.
Beach Athletics, a relatively novel inclusion in multi-sport events, demands not only explosive speed but also exceptional balance and endurance. Running on sand is akin to playing football on a rain-soaked pitch, every stride requires recalibration, every push demands more from the muscles. It is, in essence, a test of both physical prowess and tactical adaptation.
The team was seen off at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by coach and federation executive member Farid Khan Chowdhury, whose words echoed both encouragement and expectation. The athletes, in turn, expressed their resolve to deliver performances befitting the nation's pride, while also seeking the prayers and goodwill of supporters back home.
Bangladesh's campaign, though modest in numbers, carries the quiet ambition of punching above its weight. In the theatre of sand and sun, where margins are thin and stakes are high, Motaleb and Dewan will look to sprint not just against rivals, but towards a place of honour for their country.
The team is expected to return to Dhaka on 26 April, with hopes that their brief sojourn on foreign shores will yield lasting impressions.
