The government has undertaken a special initiative to support farmers in the haor regions affected by sudden flash floods, particularly in six districts--Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Sunamganj, Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj-- by assisting in the storage and sale of Boro crops and rice.
According to a press release issued on Friday (May 1) by the Ministry of Food's public relations department, the government has brought forward the previously scheduled procurement date for paddy and rice in these regions. Collection from haor farmers will now begin on May 3.
For farmers in other parts of the country, procurement will proceed as per the original schedule, with paddy collection starting on May 3 and rice collection beginning on May 15, 2026.
In the upcoming Boro season, the government will purchase 1.8 million metric tons of paddy and rice from the domestic market. This includes 500,000 metric tons of paddy, 12 lakh metric tons of parboiled rice and 100,000 metric tons of Atap rice.
The government also has set the procurement price at Tk 36 per kg for paddy, Tk 49 per kg for parboiled rice and Tk 48 per kg for Atap rice. In addition to paddy and rice, 50,000 metric tons of wheat will also be purchased at Tk 36 per kg.
