The International Crimes Tribunal’s investigation agency has nearly completed its probe into the 2013 crackdown on a Hefajat-e-Islam rally at Dhaka’s Shapla Chattar, with a final report expected by June 7.

Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam revealed on Sunday that investigators have found concrete evidence regarding at least 32 deaths at the scene during the law enforcement operation on May 5, 2013.

Speaking to journalists at his office, the Chief Prosecutor stated that besides the casualties in the capital’s Motijheel area, evidence of further fatalities in Narayanganj, Chattogram, and other parts of the country has also been secured.

He noted that the investigation, which has been active for the past 18 months, is now identifying the roles of high-ranking government officials and law enforcement personnel involved in the massacre.

Evidence has also emerged regarding individuals who provided financial backing for the crackdown, and members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League are being brought under the scope of the inquiry.

The incident occurred during a massive sit-in by Hefajat-e-Islam. Allegations suggest that after 11:00 PM, power lines were disconnected before a joint force of Police, RAB, and BGB launched a coordinated assault using sound grenades, live ammunition, and batons to disperse the protesters.

This operation has long been a point of contention regarding human rights and state accountability in Bangladesh.

Currently, over 25 individuals stand accused in this case, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir.

Other high-profile names include former Inspectors General of Police Hasan Mahmud Khandakar and Shahidul Haque, former DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed, and former RAB official Ziaul Ahsan.

Arrest warrants are also active for 12 individuals, including former State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku and Ganojagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H. Sarker, as the tribunal moves toward formal legal proceedings.
