State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin Putul on Monday said development of rural areas is essential for the overall progress of the country.

She made these remarks while inaugurating the excavation works of two canals in Bagatipara upazila of Natore district in the morning.

The state minister said canal excavation would create employment opportunities and help ensure water availability in the areas, adding that improving rural infrastructure and livelihoods remains a priority for the government. “If rural locality are developed, the country as a whole will move forward,” she said.

Emphasising self-reliance, she said the government is working to build a nation that does not depend on others, adding that achieving self-sufficiency in fisheries, water management and agriculture is crucial.

Highlighting women’s employment, Putul said various initiatives are being undertaken to create jobs for women across the country. “Around one lakh employment opportunities will be created nationwide, with nearly 80 per cent allocated for women,” she added, noting that special employment arrangements would be made in Lalpur-Bagatipara areas.

She also said there are plans to establish a meat processing zone in the areas to utilise local production and prevent wastage due to lack of cold storage facilities.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Alauddin, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Ziaur Rahman and local BNP leaders and activists, among others, were present at the event.
